Story behind the piece:
“Setting off in our shorts and t-shirts, we head up one of my favorite hikes—Sparrowhawk Tarns. A tarn is a small mountain lake. The temperatures at the valley bottom are above average, leading us to hope for a pleasant hike up to the highest tarns, located 2,400 feet above us. The hike is a bit strenuous, but it’s well worth it when you reach the expansive, lush green meadows and catch your first glimpse of the vibrant tarn. Ideally, this is what we would expect at the end of spring, but on this particular day, snow was still nearly waist high in some areas. We had to stop at the first tarn because the snow was too deep to continue. After taking many photos of my friends, I began to reflect on the day. As I gaze across the tarn and up the scree slope of Mount Sparrow Hawk, I notice how nature had sculpted an intriguing shape in the snow. I decide to use my telephoto lens to capture the scene, which I name "Rock Solo."
